David O. Russell Lines Up Cooper, Bale, Adams and Renner for Next True Story Ensemble

David O. Russell wastes no time. After winning Toronto's Audience Award with "Silver Linings Playbook" (Oscars, here it comes), he's lined up the film's star, Bradley Cooper, plus "The Fighter"'s Amy Adams and Christian Bale, and Jeremy Renner for a new untitled ensemble project.

Weekend Box Office Analysis: 'Bourne Legacy' Bumps 'Dark Knight Rises,' Streep's 'Hope Springs' Shows Legs

As the Olympics head to a close, overall weekend grosses show signs of life, and better yet, are spread over several films with different core audiences. All three new films performed well, with “Hope Springs” likely to have the best hold down the line. “The Dark Knight Rises” fell two places to third, but the biggest drop went to “Total Recall,” after a tepid opening weekend, making its second-week fall-off even more disappointing.

Weekend Preview: 'Bourne' Without 'Bourne' And the Latest from Streep, Delpy, Ferrell & Spike Lee

Everything's coming up Fresh this weekend, so it just comes down to taste. If you're in the mood for "Bourne" without Jason Bourne, Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz do a fine job (and have the longest motorcycle chase sequence ever) in "narrative architect" Tony Gilroy's "The Bourne Legacy" (Edward Norton is also worth seeing). By the end of the film, you wish for a sequel that unites Renner's Aaron Cross with Damon's Jason Bourne; otherwise the whole enterprise seems pointless.

Review: Gilroy's 'The Bourne Legacy' Delivers, Thanks to Renner

I was looking forward to "The Bourne Legacy" more than most studio sequels that have lost their signature director and star. That's because Universal turned to writer-director Tony Gilroy to reinvent the "Bourne" franchise without Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon, who became a movie star playing the title character originated by Robert Ludlum.

'Bourne Legacy' Featurette Helps Legitimize Franchise Continuation without Damon; Gilroy Talks

A featurette has landed to essentially help explain how "The Bourne Legacy" can exist sans Matt Damon. In the nearly 3-minute video (below) writer-director Tony Gilroy explains that with "Legacy," they "wanted to create a larger conspiracy. The Treadstone program you saw [in the first three films], was only one program."

Trailer Watch: 'Bourne Legacy' Plot Thickens with Renner as Aaron Cross

You hear Jason Bourne's name a lot in the new trailer for "The Bourne Legacy," but make no mistake, "Bourne" was just the beginning and Aaron Cross -- our man Jeremy Renner -- is also an emotionally unavailable badass assassin.

'The Avengers': Who Comes Out Ahead? Everyone. Almost.

When I finally saw "Marvel's The Avengers" Sunday in murky 3-D at Loew's 83rd Street Cinema in Manhattan, like everyone else in the theater, I had a roaring good time.

Review Round-Up: 'Marvel's The Avengers': The Best Super Hero Movie Of All Time?

Stakes and anticipation were high for "Marvel's The Avengers," which finally brings together a half dozen superheroes. The take-home message from most reviewers is that the super hero mash-up more than met expectations--it set the bar higher for summer blockbusters and other superhero movies alike.

Trailer Watch: Jeremy Renner Takes Over in Tony Gilroy's 'The Bourne Legacy'

I'm looking forward to "The Bourne Legacy" more than most studio sequels that have lost their signature director and star, as the "Bourne" series has. Why? Because even without Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon, this one still has DNA from screenwriter Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three and now is running the show as writer-director. He's the smart cookie behind "Michael Clayton" and "Duplicity."
