Bourne #4, Green Lantern Sequel, Monsterpocalypse and Inception Spot

In Development: - Bourne #4 is coming. Tony Gilroy is back in the saddle to write The Bourne Legacy as a sequel, not prequel, to the franchise starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, as well as a "Bourne Bible." The film is not based on the book The Bourne Legacy (written by Eric Van Lustbader, not original novelist Robert Ludlum, who died in 2001) and is set for release in 2012. Damon says he won't do it unless director Paul Greengrass returns (Greengrass directed Ultimatum and Supremacy, while Doug Liman directed the 2002 kick-off The Bourne Identity). [Anne Thompson: I'd like to see Gilroy--in many ways the series' true creator, and a crackerjack director himself (Michael Clayton, Duplicity)-- do the honors. Would Damon work with him? After he sees the script, maybe.]

Gilliam Restarts Don Quixote with McGregor

Gilliam Restarts Don Quixote with McGregor
I ran into Terry Gilliam on the Croisette, surrounded by admirers. He had been doing meetings at the Majestic to fill some gaps in the financing for his Don Quixote movie. I find it slightly depressing that world-class filmmakers like Gilliam and Julie Taymor are forced to hawk their wares at Cannes to raise financing for their films. Gilliam laughed. "I'm whoring from one hotel to the other," he said.

Rum Diary Lands R Rating Sans Heard Nudity

Well, if Bruce Robinson's indie film based on Hunter S. Thompson's The Rum Diary didn't make it to Cannes, it wasn't because it wasn't finished.

Weekend Box Office: Alice in Wonderland Beats Spider-Man and Iron Man Openings

In his first TOH Sunday domestic/international box-office report, ex-Variety numbers analyst Anthony D'Alessandro checks in with the studios behind this weekend's b.o. juggernaut, led by Disney's Alice in Wonderland---which proves yet again why studio marketers keep chasing the perfect match: branded family title + proven visual master + global movie star=blockbuster.

Alice in Wonderland: Early Reviews

Alice in Wonderland: Early Reviews
Post-London premiere, the early review floodgates have opened on Tim Burton and Linda Woolverton's reimagining of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland in 3-D, which is poised to be a box office monster when it opens wide on March 5. (I will report back after I see the movie next Tuesday.)

Depp Talks Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland Featurette

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland is almost upon us. The 3-D Disney fantasy opens March 5. The LAT's Geoff Boucher asks screenwriter Linda Woolverton (The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast) about adapting Lewis Carroll. She based a lot of this "sequel" on The Jabberwocky, one of my favorite poems of all time.

Alice in Wonderland: Depp Talks Mad Hatter

"To breathe life into the Mad Hatter is a dream come true," says Johnny Depp in this featurette for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, which according to MovieTickets.com (poll on jump) is the most anticipated 3-D movie of the coming year. Not surprising, when the competition on that list is Toy Story 3 and Shrek 3. Just saying---we haven't seen Tim Burton's version of Alice in Wonderland before.

Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus Expands

After a successful platform launch in four theaters, Sony Pictures Classics will expand The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus to about 400 theaters on January 8. Not sure how many moviegoers will be wooed by this TV spot. Most likely the film, Heath Ledger's last, will sell well when it is released on DVD, when the movie's devoted fan site will be included in the extras.
