The Top Ten 'Mad Men' Episodes (So Far)

"Mad Men" is a series with relatively little interest in picking up exactly where we left off last week. Indeed, AMC's flagship drama, which begins its seventh and final season on Sunday, delights in the episode as an art form unto itself. Here, with the requisite caveat that rankings are silly and subjective as well as good fun, are the ten best:

Things I Learned at the 'Mad Men' Season Seven Premiere, Review Roundup: "The beginning of the end" (TRAILER)

My favorite moment at the "Mad Men" Season Seven premiere: when AMC president Charles Collier asked the sprawling ensemble to rise from their seats at Hollywood's Arclight Theatre, Jon Hamm (Don Draper) and Kevin Rahm (Ted Chaough) caught sight of each other standing in the same row and waved. The Emmy-winning series is being celebrated by Time and Variety cover stories, Diane Sawyer's World News Tonight and Good Morning America before the final season of "Mad Men" debuts on April 13. (Trailer, poster and review round-up are below.)

For Don Draper's Backstory, 'Mad Men' Creator Weiner Researched Captains of Industry

The latest episode of "Mad Men" ("The Quality of Mercy") is all about alpha males protecting their territory--in this case, the ad execs in the newly merged agency Sterling Cooper & Partners. Don Draper (Jon Hamm) is undermining and challenging new partner Ted Chaough (Kevin Rahm), who is clearly infatuated with Draper's blossoming one-time protege Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), while Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser) is trying to dominate upstart Bob Benson (James Wolk).

The Cannes International Film Festival gets under way Wednesday with the international premiere of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," a perfect opening night choice given its already established hit status stateside (TOH review here). And on Thursday the edgier Cannes sidebar Director's Fortnight (or Quinzaine) will open with Israeli director Ari Folman's "The Congress," a live-action/animation hybrid starring Robin Wright and Danny Huston, which is being screened for the first time not only for Cannes audiences and critics but North American distributors as well.
