Review Roundup: Waiting Five Years Didn't Save Samurai Epic '47 Ronin'

Apparently, a five-year production schedule, cycles of reshoots and a yearlong theatrical delay couldn't save the 3-D martial arts action film "47 Ronin" starring Keanu Reeves, a virtual absentee from the big screen these last few years. With eight reviews and counting, the Reeves Samurai epic currently sits at 14% on the Tomatometer.

Fantastic Fest has unleashed its first wave of programming. Highlights from the lineup include a red-carpet premiere of Keanu Reeves' directorial debut "Man of Tai Chi," in which he also stars; Israeli crime film "Big Bad Wolves"; the Netherlands' "Borgman," which was snapped up by Drafthouse Films out of Cannes; and documentary "Narco Cultura," on the collision between Mexican drug cartels and pop culture.

Reeves Joins Actor-Director Gang with Chinese-Language 'Man of Tai Chi'

On February 28, Keanu Reeves began production in China on his directorial debut, "Man of Tai Chi." The Chinese-language film will shoot over six months in China and Hong Kong on a budget of $32 million. It is a contemporary action film; famed martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo-ping will work with Reeves, who stars in the film, as well as co-stars Tiger Chen and Karen Mok. The project is a co-production of China Film Group, Village Roadshow, Wanda Media and Universal (which will handle distribution).
