Box Office Prospects for the Foreign Language Oscar Contenders

For the final five for the Foreign Language Oscar, being in the public eye and getting attention is critical this year more than ever. For the first time, the Academy will send screeners of the final five to all voting members. In the past, only those who actually signed in to L.A. and N.Y. screenings and saw all five of the nominees were allowed to vote.

Trailer Watch: Shia Labeouf's Euro Trip Goes Haywire in 'Charlie Countryman,' with Evan Rachel Wood and Mads Mikkelsen

A first trailer arrived yesterday for "Charlie Countryman." The film, which is the feature debut of commercials director Fredrik Bond, centers on a young man (Shia Labeouf) who while on a European vacation falls in love and trouble simultaneously when he meets Gabi (Evan Rachel Wood, playing a heavily accented cellist) and discovers she's already attracted the attentions of a vicious Romanian gangster (Mads Mikkelsen).

TV IS THE NEW CINEMA: The Mikkelsen Brothers and the New Global Face(s) of Television

American TV has imported so many storylines and so many performers in recent years that the trend has become almost a running gag among observers of the medium -- and for observers of movies, too, now that both Superman and Batman are both Brits. An explanation occasionally offered is that manly men in the classic heroic mold are few and far between among recessive American thespians. When an impressively forceful and confident leading man you've never heard of turns up on a show, such as Robert Taylor on A&E's solid contemporary Western procedural "Longmire," it's a matter of course now that he will turn out to be from somewhere else.

Cannes News: Music Box Snags Competition Mikkelsen Starrer 'Michael Kohlhaas'

Ahead of its first Cannes market screening, Chicago-based Music Box Films has picked up all US and Canadian rights to Arnaud des Pallières' competition title "Michael Kohlhaas," starring Mads Mikkelsen and adapted from the 1811 Heinrich von Kleist classic Romantic novel. Films du Losange is selling the film, which is Des Pallières' fourth feature, at Cannes.

One of the front runners in the current foreign film Oscar race is Nicolaj Arcel's "A Royal Affair," starring Danish star Mads Mikkelsen and newcomer Alicia Vikander in a true romantic royal triangle. The film won screenwriting and actor prizes (for rookie Mikkel Boe Følsgaard as King Christian VII) at Berlin and is in current stateside release from Magnolia.
