Casting Watch: Maggie Smith and Kevin Kline Head to Paris for 'My Old Lady'

Protagonist Pictures announced today that Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith will star in the Paris-set dramedy "My Old Lady," the feature directorial debut of Israel Horovitz, who adapted the film from his play. Protagonist will take the film to international buyers at Cannes next week.

Even with the ending of the entire "Dowton Abbey" third season spoiled by many who read news accounts of one key cast member's departure from the series, which has already concluded in the UK, the PBS "Masterpiece Classic" debut on Sunday drew a preliminary Nielsen average of 7.9 million viewers. The new season adds Shirley MacLaine as Elizabeth McGovern's mother, who gives dowager Maggie Smith a run for her money.

Dustin Hoffman's genteel directorial debut "Quartet," starring Maggie Smith and a legion of other notable Brit actors as members of a musicans' retirement community, will play best for music-loving Anglophiles who enjoy the company of wily and entertaining British seniors. Yet again, Dame Smith steals the show as a proud aging diva who arrives with no idea how much she wounded the husband she once jilted during her more playful days at the top of the opera world. Tom Courtenay is her courtly swain, while Billy Connolly and Pauline Collins chew up the scenery as the remaining members of a once-famous quartet.

The nominations for the 15th annual Moët British Independent Film Awards were announced today and leading the pack with nine nominations is "Broken," which scored nods for Best Film, Best Director and Best Debut Director for Rufus Norris, Best Actor for Tim Roth and two Best Supporting Actor nominations for Cillian Murphy and Rory Kinnear.
