‘Project Greenlight’ Returns, and They Want Your Work

Some nine years after going off the air, HBO, Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon have revived “Project Greenlight" in a new day and age for discovery. As introduced in a very quick video, the project, in Damon’s words, remains an exercise in “documenting what’s actually happening when people try to make a movie together.”

Weekend Box Office Top Ten: 'Elysium' Gives Sony First Number One Film Since 'Evil Dead'

Four new films opened this August weekend to overall decent if not sensational results, and several long-running performers yielded a top 10 slightly ahead of last year ($149 million vs. $129 million), bringing the year-to-date total about even with 2012. But four new films before marketing boasted production costs of $300 million; budgets increased dramatically. So far the summer has yielded six flops. Sony's "Elysium" led the way at the weekend box office with $30 million, which was slightly below expectations for acclaimed young "District 9" director Neill Blomkamp.

First-Time Feature Composer Ryan Amon Scores Neill Blomkamp's Sci-Fi Thriller 'Elysium'

The email was unexpected and short--a single sentence: "Is this you?"--with a YouTube link and a signature from a name Ryan Amon didn't recognize: Neill Blomkamp. "It's a little bit embarrassing," Amon says of his first reaction to the message: "I had to Google his name!" When he did so, of course, he found the up-and-coming South African-born director who had catapulted to international acclaim with his 2009 film "District 9."

South African writer-director Neill Blomkamp had a tall mountain to climb with his follow-up to low-budget Best Picture Oscar contender "District 9," which scored $215 million worldwide. Ever since the indie pick-up put Blomkamp on the map as an original filmmaker with an extraordinary command over VFX, film fans have eagerly awaited his next. Sony primed the pump for his $90 million sci-fi thriller "Elysium" (August 9) at Comic-Con last year, where Hall H exploded over seven minutes of early footage.
