Comic-Con 2014: Why 'The Giver' is like 'Tron: Legacy' and 'John Carter'

The Comic-Con footage for "The Giver" looks good once you get past the all-too similar dystopian subject matter. Even though Lois Lowry's book paved the way for all that young adult fiction 21 years ago, can the Weinsteins make audiences want to see it?

TriStar's Rothman Adds 'Bridesmaids' Scribes Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo to His Starry Roster

Chalk up another win for new TriStar Productions chief Tom Rothman, who is lining up an impressive roster of movies for Sony release. The latest: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the writing team behind 2011's groundbreaking "Bridesmaids," are joining forces to write, produce and star in another comedy. The film will also be Wiig's directorial debut, a welcome change, given that of the 129 major films due to be released this year, only four are directed by women.

Ten Meryl Streep Characters Through a Feminist Gaze

Meryl Streep is a cinema nonpareil whose acting talent and aura seemingly can't be explained. Nominated for a record 18 Academy Awards and winner of three, Streep is up for an Oscar on March 2 for her over-the-top portrayal of a grieving, drug-addicted mother in John Wells' movie version of Tracy Letts' Broadway smash "August: Osage County," although she's not pegged for another win. Critic Karina Longworth zeroes in on ten iconic Streep characters in her new book.
