Thompson on Hollywood

From Meryl Streep to Expendables Mel Gibson and Harrison Ford, Big Stars in Small Roles Boost Summer Blockbusters

Comic-Con 2014: Why 'The Giver' Is Like 'Tron: Legacy' and 'John Carter'

The Comic-Con footage for "The Giver" looks good once you get past the all-too similar dystopian subject matter. Even though Lois Lowry's book paved the way for all that young adult fiction 21 years ago, can the Weinsteins make audiences want to see it?

Chalk up another win for new TriStar Productions chief Tom Rothman, who is lining up an impressive roster of movies for Sony release. The latest: Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the writing team behind 2011's groundbreaking "Bridesmaids," are joining forces to write, produce and star in another comedy. The film will also be Wiig's directorial debut, a welcome change, given that of the 129 major films due to be released this year, only four are directed by women.
