Interview: How Noomi Rapace Became a Global Movie Star, from 'Dragon Tattoo' to Ridley Scott, Brian De Palma and 'Dead Man Down'

Swedish actress Noomi Rapace never wanted to go Hollywood. As far as she's concerned, she hasn't changed her preference for complicated, compelling roles. Look at the range of what she's done since "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" series catapulted her into a bankable global marquee name. She played a happily married woman facing her estranged, once-abusive mother in Pernilla August's Swedish family drama "Beyond." Rapace brought strength and spirituality to her role as a space-trekking scientist in Ridley Scott's summer epic "Prometheus." And she didn't play another pretty sidekick in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," which led to her co-starring opposite Rachel McAdams again in Brian De Palma's kinky Eurothriller "Passion," which comes out in June.

While Brian De Palma is best-known for directing sexually-tinged Hitchcockian thrillers such as "Dressed to Kill," "Body Double," and "Obsession," my two fave De Palmas are Stephen King's "Carrie," which is being remade with his blessing by pal Kimberly Pierce, and "Blow Out," starring John Travolta. While De Palma has scored as a studio technician with a strong sense of style--and bravura camera moves-- in such movies as the original "Mission Impossible," "Snake Eyes," "Carlito's Way," "Scarface" and "The Untouchables," the filmmaker started as an indie in the 1970s and is back in the indie world with European-financed thrillers such as "Black Dahlia" and "Passion," which recently played Venice, Toronto and completes the fest trifecta in New York. The Toronto screening of the film was packed with buyers; no announcement of a sale has been made as yet.

Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" premieres in the U.S. on June 8, but after overseas debuts in France, Russia, and England critics have inked their responses and some spoiler-heavy ones at that. The handful of critics who published early reviews agree that the film's visuals are stunning and Ridley Scott is right at home in the "world creation" part of his fantasy films. The new featurette on the space ship Prometheus posted below is irrefutable evidence of stunning visuals. It's still up for debate whether the movie provides substance to the heady questions of morality and existence.
