Cannes First Look: Paul Haggis Talks 'Third Person,' starring Neeson, Wilde, Franco, Kunis

Paul Haggis has been quiet since his last outing as writer-director, 2010’s “The Next Three Days,” with only a credit on the videogame "Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" to fill in the gap between then and now. But he turned up in Cannes to beat the publicity drum for "Third Person," a multi-stranded relationship drama he shot last fall in Paris, Rome and Cinecitta Studios.

The SXSW Film Festival's opening night has been the terrain of celebrity-infused audience-pleasers from "Kick-Ass" to "The Cabin In the Woods" and this year played to a seemingly winning formula. Friday evening, Jim Carrey, Steve Carell and Olivia Wilde took to the stage at the Paramount Theater in the heart of Austin to introduce "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" to a packed and rowdy audience that SXSW seems to breed and studios (and their smaller brethren) eat up. If spontaneous hollers and boisterous guffaws can pass as a barely scientific poll for how a film played, then "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" appeared to be a hit. Brass at New Line, indeed, received what past openers have found here -- a raucous crowd.

A new trailer for "The Words" reveals yet another tortured writer plot (see a more whimsical take in the trailer for "Ruby Sparks"). In this version, Bradley Cooper stars as a writer who finally arrives as the next hot young American novelist. The twist is that he's living a lie, even from his wife (Zoe Saldana). He didn't write the book--he found it and loved it and submiitted it as his own. But the past bites him in the ass as he becomes a huge success. The movie within a movie stars Olivia Wilde and Dennis Quaid, who is telling the story about the young writer. "The Words" was an official 2012 Sundance Film Festival selection, where it was acquired by CBS Films, and opens in theaters September 21, 2012.
