'Her' Review: Spike Jonze Returns with a Vengeance with Tech Romance (Q & A)

Some of the best movies come from filmmakers on the rebound from a flop. After years of struggling to finish his labor of love, the idiosyncratic Maurice Sendak adaptation "Where the Wild Things Are," Spike Jonze has returned with a vengeance, for the first time writing as well as directing the story of a man on the rebound from a failed marriage. "Her" can be viewed as the flip side of Sofia Coppola's Oscar-winning movie about the end of their relationship, "Lost in Translation."

Critics Choice Movie Awards: '12 Years a Slave' and 'American Hustle' Tally 13 Nominations, Bullock Grabs Three, Lawrence Two, Johansson and Larson, One

Last year "Argo" began its drumbeat of wins from the Critics Choice Movie Awards, which are often a bellwether for the Oscars. "I want to thank the Academy," quipped Ben Affleck as he accepted his prize on the evening he was snubbed by the Academy director's branch. This year's Critics' Choice nominees are led by critics' faves “12 Years a Slave” and “American Hustle,” with thirteen nominations each.

Spike Jonze Previews 'Her' Before its New York Film Festival Unveiling

Spike Jonze did not have a completed film to show at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, even though he'd been working on his fourth feature "Her" for three years, and editing the film for 14 months. It was "a relentless process" he said at the TIFF Q & A. "I don't know what I'm making, I find it along the way." But he did provide a tantalizing preview of "Her," which was financed by Megan Ellison's Annapurna, via clips and a talk with his friend, filmmaker Kelly Reichardt.

Telluride Update: Buyers Lining Up for Divisive 'Under the Skin,' Strong Debut 'Palo Alto' and Provocative 'Starred Up' (TRAILER)

Reviews and acquisitions are heating up at the 40th annual Telluride Film Festival, which kicked off yesterday. Three notable acquisitions titles debuted Thursday night of which I saw one, "Palo Alto," the impressive debut of young filmmaker Gia Coppola (Francis Ford's granddaughter, born six months after her father Gio's accidental death) which will also play Venice and Toronto. Yet another dark high school drama in "Kids" mode centered on a group of teens with a penchant for finding trouble, "Palo Alto" is adapted from a book of short stories by James Franco,
