Nick Nolte Rocks the House at 'The Company You Keep' Q&A, from Redford to Draft Dodging to Malick

Robert Redford is an impeccably controlled filmmaker who takes his art seriously. While none of his films have been as accessibly commercial as "Ordinary People," which won him the directing Oscar, this movie is Redford's best since "Quiz Show."

Director John Hillcoat and Screenwriter Nick Cave Talk 'Lawless'

At Cannes, I sat down with the director and screenwriter of "Lawless," John Hillcoat and Nick Cave, who also wrote "The Proposition." This gorgeously mounted period adaptation of "The Wettest County in the World," which is palying out around the country, about the real-life Virginia rum-runner Bondurants, is more family relationship drama than actioner. Tom Hardy is the standout as a sensitive but violent head of the family who is more protective mother hen than father; the rest of the strong ensemble includes Shia LaBeouf, Guy Pearce, Gary Oldman and actresses Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska, who shine in underwritten roles.  (Here's more background on how the indie movie got made.) Hillcoat and Cave explain why.

Casting Watch: Shia LaBeouf Might Get Naked Again for Lars Von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac'

Shia LaBeouf, nymphomaniac? Danish auteur Lars von Trier wants the "Transformers" star for his upcoming film, "Nymphomaniac." Set to shoot this September, the film already has Trier's muse, Charlotte Gainsbourg ("Antichrist," "Melancholia") on board to star as a woman whose erotic life is tracked from birth to age fifty, as told to her husband, to be played by Trier vet Stellan Skarsgard. Nicole Kidman may also appear in the film. Should LaBeouf's talks to join the film prove fruitful, he may get to strut his naked body on screen for the second time. He recently lent himself to an eight-plus minute Sigur Ros video, which you can watch below. Not a bad audition tape for a Trier film.
