When Hollywood Met Broadway: Screen Stars Hit the Stage as Stage-to-Screen Musicals (and Vice-Versa) Move Through the Pipeline

Let's face it, movie musicals are usually bad. Don't get me wrong, nobody should love them more than me: I'm a movie nerd and a musical nerd, so a movie musical should be exactly what the doctor ordered. But sometimes the whole ends up a lot less than the sum of its parts. Think pickles plus peanut butter: Just. Don't. Do it. (Or think "Rock of Ages." Exactly.) But every now and again something like "Les Miserables" happens and we remember that movie musicals can be awesome. Sure, they're bombastic and unrealistic. Yes, it's weird that people start singing on the street and orchestral music seeps out of the very air.

Makeup Artists Talk Challenges of 'Cloud Atlas': Multiple Characters, Movie Stars Hanks & Berry, Yellowface & Political Correctness

Tom Hanks and Halle Berry have starred in a combined 88 films, so when tasked to transform two of Hollywood's most familiar faces, “Cloud Atlas'” hair, make-up and prosthetics designers Jeremy Woodhead and Daniel Parker had only one place to start: the nose.

Weekend Box Office Top Ten: 'Argo' Sings, 'Cloud Atlas' Doesn't

This pre-Halloween weekend, one Warner Bros. release soared to the top of the box office line-up on strong word of mouth. The other, with a C+ Cinemascore, could be sinking fast. "Cloud Atlas," their expensive epic from three major directors, failed to gross $10 million, a soft opening for this much-ballyhooed $100-million epic. But "Argo" climbed to #1, showing more strength in its third week than robust initial reaction indicated.

Tom Hanks Slams for Fallon (Video)

What's with Hollywood stars rapping and slamming? Gwenyth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz took it in the chin for their misguided musical ode to Chelsa Handler. The latest actor leaving his comfort zone is Oscar-winner Tom Hanks, who played slam poet on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" as he meditated on 1990s sitcom "Full House."

Production on Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," yet another behind-the-scenes Hollywood movie (see "Hitchcock," "The Girl," "My Week with Marilyn"), was well under way in Los Angeles last week when the news broke that scribe Kelly Marcel landed the coveted gig to adapt E.L. James erotic bestseller "Fifty Shades of Grey." This was not in Disney's marketing plan.

'Cloud Atlas' Review and Roundup: And Now for Something Completely Different

One Toronto movie met mixed response but was a delirious joyride for me: "Cloud Atlas." Truth is, except for the flat "V for Vendetta" and the final pixel-fucked "Matrix" movie, I've admired all of the Wachowskis' output, even "Speed Racer." These filmmakers have it all: strong writing chops, an instinct for entertaining audiences, and compelling visual style.
