Titans Peter Jackson and George Miller Take Over the Con with 'Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies' and 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (POSTERS & TRAILERS)

Despite the momentary wow factor of glimpsing that spooky stare-down in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," (yes, Ben Affleck looks perfectly suited as The Dark Knight), the real joy of the Warner Bros. Hall H panel on Saturday was Peter Jackson and George Miller geeking out about the "The Hobbit" finale and the re-imagined "Mad Max."

Lionsgate Slots Tom Hardy Russia Thriller for Spring

What does it signify that Lionsgate and Summit are slotting director Daniel Espinosa's "Child 44" for spring release (April 17, 2015)? Given that Tom Hardy--probably the most exciting young actor working today--is not yet a guaranteed box office draw (see "Warriors," "Locke"), Lionsgate may have wanted to use the award season as a springboard for a complex World War II period thriller set in Stalinist Russia that is by no means a guaranteed commercial hit. (What is these days?)

Tom Hardy's Time Has Come, from Miller's 'Fury Road' to Gonzalez Inarritu's 'The Revenant,' with DiCaprio

Tom Hardy is coming up in a number of films at various stages of production. Due in May 2015 is 69-year-old Australian doctor-turned-director George Miller's long-in-the-works summer release, the "Mad Max" reboot "Fury Road," which hit the cover of EW this week for their terrific "Apocalypse Issue." Also in the works for the in-demand Hardy are the Dennis Lehane robbery story "The Drop," which Fox Searchlight should unveil at Telluride or Toronto, Daniel Espinosa's post-World War II Russian thriller "Child 44," starring Gary Oldman (Lionsgate), and the title role in still-in-development Elton John biopic "Rocketman." Now Hardy will join his "Inception" costar Leonardo DiCaprio in New Regency’s western “The Revenant,” directed by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
