AFI FEST 2013 Opens with 'Saving Mr. Banks' and Closes with 'Inside Llewyn Davis,' More Early Details

The American Film Institute has announced early details of its AFI FEST 2013 program. The North American Premiere Gala of Disney’s "Saving Mr. Banks" will open the festival on Thursday, November 7. The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" will close the festival on November 14.

The American Film Institute has announced early details of its AFI FEST 2013 program. The North American Premiere Gala of Disney's "Saving Mr. Banks," starring Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, will open the festival on Thursday, November 7. The Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" will close the festival on November 14.

On Friday November 8, AFI FEST will premiere "Moneyball" director Bennett Miller's new film "Foxcatcher," starring Steve Carrell. The festival has also announced that French auteur Agnes Varda will serve as Guest Artistic Director.

More details will unspool in the coming weeks. AFI FEST runs November 7-14 in Hollywood.

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
