AFI FEST Adds World Cinema, Classics and Independents to November Program

At this point festivals like London and AFI FEST all start to resemble one another as they score a world premiere or two ("Saving Mr. Banks" and "Out of the Furnace" respectively) and lay out the usual smorgasbord of awards contenders. But Hollywood's AFI FEST (November 7-14) is adding a rich selection of films to its World Cinema, American Independents, Breakthrough, Midnight, Cinema’s Legacy and Presentations selections, including 15 foreign Oscar submissions.

At this point festivals like London and AFI FEST all start to resemble one another as they score a world premiere or two ("Saving Mr. Banks" and "Out of the Furnace" respectively) and lay out the usual smorgasbord of awards contenders. But Hollywood's AFI FEST (November 7-14) is adding films to its World Cinema, American Independents, Breakthrough, Midnight, Cinema’s Legacy and Presentations selections.

This year’s program includes the return of several filmmakers to AFI FEST including Jafar Panahi ("Closed Curtains"); Kim Ki-duk ("Moebius"); Hong Sang-soo ("Our Sunhi") and Xavier Dolan ("Tom at the Farm").

The AFI selection favors 14 films from 54 AFI alumni, including "Breathe In" from writer-director Drake Doremus; "La Jaula de Oro" by writer-director Diego Quemada-Diez; "We've Got to Get Out of this Place" from producer Brian Udovich and director Zeke Hawkins; and "Machsom" by director Bayard Outerbridge.

The complete AFI FEST 2013 program includes 119 films (83 features, 36 shorts), representing 43 countries. There are 27 films directed/co-directed by women and 10 documentaries.

The breakdown by section is: Galas/Tributes (8), Special Screenings (7), American Independents (6), New Auteurs (10), World Cinema (32), Midnight (5), Breakthrough (4), Guest Artistic Director (6), Presentations (2), Cinema’s Legacy (3) and Short Films (36), and includes 15 official Foreign Language Film Oscar® submissions.

We love to catch up on the foreign Oscar submissions at AFI FEST and will be posting reviews. Of the ones we've seen, try to catch Chile's "Gloria," Mexico's "Heli," Cambodia's "The Missing Picture," Japan's "The Wind Rises" from great animator Hayao Miyazaki, an India's fest hit "The Lunchbox" starring Irrfan Khan which was unaccountably not submitted by India.

The films in the World Cinema, American Independents, Breakthrough and the previously announced New Auteurs sections are eligible for their respective section’s Audience Award, while the previously announced Shorts and New Auteurs programs also feature jury-selected prizes.

Among the classics you get a rare chance to see Disney musical "Mary Poppins," the subject of "Saving Mr. Banks."
