The  2012 BAFTA nominations are led by "The Artist" (twelve nominations), "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (eleven), "Hugo" (nine), "My Week With Marilyn" (six), "The Help" and "War Horse" (five each), "Drive," "The Iron Lady," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" (four each), "Moneyball," "The Descendants," "We Need to Talk About Kevin," and "Senna" (three each) and two nominations each for "Shame," "The Ides of March", "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Bridesmaids" and "The Adventures of Tintin."

BAFTA impact on Oscar nominations is nil, as ballots have already been filed. So these nominations and eventual wins will have minimal imfluence on the next phase of the Oscar race. Reading the tea leaves, with the Brit block of Oscar voters, "The Artist" and "The Descendants" continue to lead the Oscar pack, followed by "The Help," "Hugo," which earned a director but not best film slot here, "Moneyball" and "Midnight in Paris," which earned writing nods, and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "War Horse," which scored only in technical castegories. Oddly, "The Tree of Life" was shut out--not even cinematography.

The Brit block of Oscar voters who delivered a surprise best picture nomination for "Atonement" are high on "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," so there's an outside chance that respected Gary Oldman, who got some serious love at tributes at the Gotham Awards and the recent Palm Springs Fest, could steal non-BAFTA nominee Leonardo DiCaprio's "J. Edgar" slot. But it's more likely that the Brits will come through for actors Michael Fassbender for "Shame," Tilda Swinton for "We Need to Talk About Kevin," Meryl Streep for British-made 'The Iron Lady" and Michelle Williams and Kenneth Branagh for Brit entry "My Week with Marilyn," as well as technical noms for "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2."

Your title was confusing. "Lead" is not spelled "led."

    And vice versa.
