Before its launch in Venice and Toronto Fest, Sony Pictures Classics has scooped up Barney's Version. Based on Mordecai Richler's acclaimed comic novel and directed by Richard J. Lewis, the film's stellar cast is led by Paul Giamatti, Minnie Driver, Dustin Hoffman and Rosamund Pike. The story spans three decades of Barney's extraordinary life (although he is an ordinary man), running through three wives, an absurd father and an indulgent best friend.

Producer Robert Lantos is "delighted" to turn the film over to Sony, who state: "rarely does a major novel come to life so completely and so richly on the screen as it does here with Barney's Version…producer Robert Lantos more than fulfills his multi year dream of filming Mordecai Richler's masterpiece. We look forward to presenting the film to the American audience."

The trailer for Barney's Version is after the jump.

I'm surprised and curious about the murder mystery angle, which is such a prominent element in the book, being sidestepped in the synopses and trailer released so far.
