The Academy has tallied 289 feature films eligible for the 2014 best picture Oscar. To be in contention, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in LA County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days. The full list of contenders is after the jump.

Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Last year, 282 films were eligible for the best picture Oscar. A maximum of ten films can be nominated for best picture. Per Academy rules instated in 2011, the total number of best picture nominees can be anywhere between five and ten. Nine films were nominated for best picture in the 85th Academy Awards.

The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater. The Oscar show will air live on Sunday, March 2, 2014 on ABC and in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

Here are the eligible films for the original song category, announced today. Click through for the full list of all 289 films eligible for best picture.

I might be wrong, but I think that list has 286 movies.
