Carradine Was to Star in Indie Pic Portland

David Carradine, who apparently accidentally hung himself in his Bangkok hotel room closet with a curtain rope, will not be finishing Stretch, the movie he was shooting. (Here's the NYT obit, and Film in Focus.) Carradine was fabulous in the title role in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill and as Woody Guthrie in Hal Ashby's Bound for Glory, which was shown recently at the American Cinematheque. Carradine made a memorable appearance, performed on guitar, and seemed a tad out of it, according to reports. A podcast is here.

Carradine was keeping very busy in recent years. I saw him in a key role in My Suicide, a terrific indie pic which debuted at SXSW and has yet to find a distributor. According to the IMDb, Carradine has appeared in a number of other current and upcoming projects:

Carradine was set to co-star in Matthew Mishory's indie feature, Portland, which was scheduled to film in Los Angeles and Portland this summer. The filmmakers, while saddened by his loss, will replace him, they said.

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She wrote for The Washington Post, The London Observer, Wired, More, and Vanity Fair, and did staff stints at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
