Casting Watch: Julianne Moore Joins 'Hunger Games: Mockingjay' Parts 1 and 2

Julianne Moore has joined the cast of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2." She will play President Alma Coin, who leads the rebellion against the Capitol.

Julianne Moore has joined the cast of "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2." She will play President Alma Coin, who leads the rebellion against the Capitol.

Moore, who has been nominated for an impressive four Oscars ("Boogie Nights," "The Hours," "The End of the Affair" and "Far from Heaven") joins recent Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook"), who of course stars as archer extraordinaire Katniss Everdeen. Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth are also on board for the series' third and fourth installments, which are slated for release in November 2014 and November 2015, respectively.

In the immediate pipeline, Moore has Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut "Don Jon" (September 27), and Kimberly Peirce's remake of "Carrie" (October 18), starring Chloe Moretz. In 2014, among other titles, she'll be seen in David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars," starring Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" hits theaters November 22 of this year. Watch the most recent trailer here.

Thompson on Hollywood

Born and raised in Manhattan, Anne Thompson grew up going to the Thalia and The New Yorker and wound up at grad Cinema Studies at NYU. She worked at United Artists and Film Comment before heading west as that magazine's west coast editor. She wrote for the LA Weekly, Sight and Sound, Empire, The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly before serving as West Coast Editor of Premiere. She wrote for The Washington Post, The London Observer, Wired, More, and Vanity Fair, and did staff stints at The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. She eventually took her blog Thompson on Hollywood to Indiewire. She taught film criticism at USC Critical Studies, and continues to host the fall semester of “Sneak Previews” for UCLA Extension.
