Oscar Watch: Profiles of the Nine Shortlisted Foreign Language Oscar Contenders UPDATED

Nine films out of 63 qualified submissions are moving on in the race for the Oscar for Foreign Language Film. The Phase I foreign language committee of several hundred L.A.-based Academy voters screened the films between mid-October and January 13.

BAFTA Nominations Lead by 'The Artist' and 'Tinker Tailor'; 'Drive' Gets Best Film Nod, 'Tree of Life' Shut Out

The  2012 BAFTA nominations are led by "The Artist" (twelve nominations), "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (eleven), "Hugo" (nine), "My Week With Marilyn" (six), "The Help" and "War Horse" (five each), "Drive," "The Iron Lady," "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2" (four each), "Moneyball," "The Descendants," "We Need to Talk About Kevin," and "Senna" (three each) and two nominations each for "Shame," "The Ides of March", "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "Bridesmaids" and "The Adventures of Tintin."

Golden Globes Backstage Live Blog: 'The Descendants' and Clooney Win, 'Punisher' Weinstein Wins Six, Including Streep, Wiliams,'The Artist,' Dujardin UPDATED

The Golden Globes went very much the way we all expected. The Weinsteins came out ahead thanks to the musical comedy category. They had six wins total, including "The Artist," best actor Jean Dujardin, and score, as well as actress Michelle Williams for "My Week with Marilyn" and drama "The Iron Lady"'s Meryl Streep and best original song for Madonna's "W.E." "We thought it was a small movie for festivals that critics could enjoy," says "The Artist" director Michel Hazanavicius backstage. "We did not expect this."

Yet again, there's much to learn from the Golden Globe nominees for Best Foreign Language Film. Screen International's Mike Goodridge moderated the Cinematheque panel: Angelina Jolie ("In The Land of Blood and Honey," USA), Pedro Almodovar ("The Skin I Live In," Spain), Asghar Farhadi ("A Separation," Iran) and Luc and Jean-Pierre Dardenne ("The Kid With a Bike," France/Belgium). Not present was China's nominee Zhang Yimou ("The Flowers of War").
