Friday Box Office: 'Transformers' Dominates as Expected, '22 Jump Street' Holds Well

The field was clear for "Transformers: Age of Extinction" (Paramount), Michael Bay's fourth and, to the tune of $210 million, most expensive robot vs. human epic. And the film delivered with an opening day figure of $41.6 million.

Arthouse Audit: Polanski's Provocative 'Venus in Fur' Tops Tepid Specialized Openings

Films from two established directors (Paul Haggis and Roman Polanski) offered well-hyped new releases this weekend. Polanski's "Venus In Fur" (IFC) (also available on Video on Demand) was the clear leader. Paul Haggis' "Third Person" (Sony Pictures Classics) fared less well, doomed by high profile negative reviews.

Box Office Top Ten: 'Think Like a Man Too' Takes Number One, 'Jersey Boys' Draws Seniors on Soft Summer Weekend

The studios have skewed their summer releases around the World Cup, which is taking a bite out of the box office. So this weekend's new releases are aimed at domestic audiences; two films are likely to do more than the usual amount of their business in the U.S. The result was a mixed bag. Leading the pack was Tim Story's "Think Like a Man Too," with breakout star Kevin Hart.

Sony Sequels 'Think Like a Man Too' and '22 Jump Street' Dominate Mixed Friday Box Office

Compared to last year's numbers, Friday's domestic box office took the sharpest overall drop of 2014, with no new tentpoles opening because of the ongoing World Cup -- and in anticipation of next week's "Transformers" juggernaut. And since summertime release dates are always created with an eye on international markets, the two new films are aimed much more toward domestic audiences.

Arthouse Audit: 'The Rover' and 'Signal' Open Soft; Sundancers 'Ivory Tower' and 'Hellion' OK

Fresh from Cannes, both "The Rover" and wider release "How to Train Your Dragon 2" opened this weekend. Just a year ago enterprising A24 opened "The Bling Ring," but the comparison ends there. A24's "The Rover" opened to only a fraction of the initial returns that Sofia Coppola's film received, and, despite decent reviews and previously successful directing and acting elements, the film fell well below expectations. The same company's "Obvious Child" showed some promise in its second weekend expansion, but the overall specialized market is lagging behind healthier grosses over recent months.

Box Office Top Ten: So Far Comedy, Family Fare and Fox Dominate the Summer

Hollywood front-loaded the summer with big-budget actioners to get ahead of the month-long World Cup, which provides massive international competition. But this weekend two sequels, Sony comedy "22 Jump Street" and Dreamworks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon 2" scored well stateside. And both improved on their previous efforts' March openings, each delivering more than $50 million, which is rare for the same weekend.

Friday Box Office: '22 Jump Street' and 'Train Your Dragon 2' Both Headed for $50 Million-Plus Weekends

Studios played it safe this weekend opposite the start of the World Cup--which is more damaging to overall box office internationally--by debuting two sequels domestically. Both the well-reviewed "22 Jump Street" and "How to Train Your Dragon 2" look headed to over $50 million for the weekend, a rare occurrence for more than one new film.
