Weekend Box Office: 'Underworld: Awakening' Sizzles with Beckinsale, 'Haywire" Fizzles with Carano

Things are looking up at the 2012 box office, which featured a bevy of strong women this weekend. Four new films arriving or expanding into wide release outperformed expectations, marking the third consecutive up frame of the year. The estimated total for all films was $135 million, up a solid 32% from the comparable weekend last year, a nice achievement considering the heavy snow storms battering the Midwest and East Coast as well as competition from the NFL playoffs. Lionsgate, Wrekin Hill to Release "Dark Tide" on VOD Before Theatrical Run

Lionsgate and Wrekin Hill Entertainment are teaming up to try a controversial distribution strategy for Wrekin Hill's upcoming action film "Dark Tide": release it on video before it gets to theaters.

Weekend Preview: 'Haywire,' 'Extremely Loud,' 'We Need To Talk About Kevin' & More

Michael Fassbender is in theaters again, this time with Steven Soderbergh's "Haywire." He may have a smaller part in this film compared to "Shame," "Jane Eyre," "A Dangerous Method" or "X-Men," but the best scene in the movie is still his.

MLK Weekend Box Office: 'Contraband' Steals Thunder from 3-D 'Beauty and the Beast' UPDATED

With three new films opening in wide release, Universal’s “Contraband” easily captured the top spot at the boxoffice. During the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend the Working Title film tracked an estimated $28.8 million at theaters, which exceeded pre-release expectations, which had “Contraband” and “Beauty” in a race for the top spot. The opening marked a company best for Working Title. Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale star in the R-rated action thriller, about a criminal who has given up his errant ways and gets pulled back into the business one more time.
