2011 Sundance Film Fest Theatrical Acquisitions Underperform – Set Low Expectations for 2012

What does "Our Idiot Brother" have in common with "The Kids Are All Right," "Precious," "Sunshine Cleaning," "Once," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "March of the Penguins”? Like those other titles (distributed between 2005-2011), it was the highest-grossing film in theaters among those acquired at the Sundance Film Festival (SFF) the year it premiered.

Locarno Fest's Retrospective Will Screen Director Otto Preminger's Entire Body of Work

The Locarno Film Festival (August 1-11) will partner with the Swiss and French Cinémathèques for its 2012 retrospective, devoted to Austrian-Hungarian director Otto Preminger ("Laura" [1944], "Anatomy of a Murder" [1959], "Porgy and Bess" [1959]). Preminger's entire body of work - forty films - will be screened in 35mm prints along with fest discussions with filmmakers, actors and critics. The retrospective's curator, Carlo Chatrian, will also hold a roundtable discussion open to fest attendees. Capricci will publish French and English versions of a book on Preminger, and the screenings will be repeated by each of the Cinémathèques in the fall.

SXSW 2012 Opening Night Film Is Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard's 'The Cabin in the Woods'; Lena Dunham To Premiere HBO Series 'Girls'

Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's horror production "The Cabin in the Woods" (Lionsgate, April 13) will open the 2012 South by Southwest Film Festival, which runs March 9 – 17, 2012 in Austin, Texas. Whedon will also participate in a key Conversation at the conference on March 10. And SXSW will premiere the first three episodes of SXSW discovery Lena Dunham's ten-part HBO series "Girls" (April) along with a March 13 panel on the series featuring producer Judd Apatow and writer-director-actress Dunham.

Parker Posey Hosting Sundance Awards Ceremony; Jurors Revealed

The Sundance Institute reveals the jury members of the six juries that will be granting prizes at the 2012 festival. The awards ceremony January 28 will be hosted by Parker Posey and live streamed here. Short film awards will be announced January 24 at a separate ceremony.

Prescreen Streams Indie Films, Sundance Trailers

As Sundance approaches, the films that don’t score breakout status may not have to fade into obscurity. After attending Sundance 2010, former Groupon executive Shawn Bercuson realized that most of the films would never be seen again. He launched Prescreen.com, a movie marketing and distribution platform, in late 2011. Prescreen is a streaming service dedicated to indie films, aiming to help audiences “discover one new movie each day.”

HollyShorts 2012 Now Accepting Submissions for August Fest

The HollyShorts Film Festival is now accepting submissions. The fest, in its 8th year, runs August 9-16. Last year's fest featured work from the likes of Jennifer Aniston, Neil Labute and Kate Hudson. Cash prizes are given for Best Short, Director, Music Video and Commercial, and $30,000 in post production serves are given by Company 3.
