Cannes Market: Lionsgate Acquires Thriller 'The Quiet Ones,' Sets 2014 Release Date

Ahead of the opening of the Cannes market, Lionsgate has nabbed North American distribution rights to Hammer Films genre flick "The Quiet Ones," a supernatural thriller starring Jared Harris ("Mad Men," "Lincoln") and Sam Claflin ("Hunger Games: Catching Fire"). Lionsgate has booked an April 25, 2014 release date.

Cannes: American Pavilion Announces 25th Anniversary Programming Lineup

The American Pavilion has announced the programming for its 25th anniversary at the Cannes Film Festival. Guests will include actor Randy Quaid, screenwriter and filmmaker James Toback, comedic actor and "Nebraska" star Will Forte, director Stephen Frears, composer Cliff Martinez and many more, along with a special panel honoring film critic Roger Ebert.

CANNES EXCLUSIVE: Ari Folman Talks Fortnight Opener 'The Congress,' Which Predicts Hollywood's Chilling Future (TRAILER)

The Cannes International Film Festival gets under way Wednesday with the international premiere of Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby," a perfect opening night choice given its already established hit status stateside (TOH review here). And on Thursday the edgier Cannes sidebar Director's Fortnight (or Quinzaine) will open with Israeli director Ari Folman's "The Congress," a live-action/animation hybrid starring Robin Wright and Danny Huston, which is being screened for the first time not only for Cannes audiences and critics but North American distributors as well.

WATCH: Cannes Trailer for James Franco's 'As I Lay Dying'

Just before its premiere in Un Certain Regard at Cannes this year, the trailer for James Franco's "As I Lay Dying" has emerged. This is Franco's adaptation of William Faulkner's 1930 novel. Franco has written and directed the film and will star as Darl Bundren.

51st New York Film Festival Now Accepting Submissions

The Film Society of Lincoln Center is now accepting submissions for the 51st New York Film Festival, which runs September 27 through October 13, 2013. The festival typically hosts an average of 28 feature films and 16 shorts in its slate, selected by a 5-person committee chaired by director of programming Kent Jones.

Cannes 2012 Box Office Led by 'Moonrise Kingdom,' Will Strong Fest Sales Repeat in 2013?

Led by a recent year (and possibly all time) record of 21 of 22 official competition films gaining U.S. distribution (including some yet to play), 2012's Cannes line-up (from all sections) shows 58 total -- much above average -- out of 100 titles that were presented ending up with domestic rights acquired, most of them after their festival showings.

Check out this teaser trailer for French director Francois Ozon's latest, 'Young and Beautiful," which premieres in competition at Cannes on May 16. In the trailer, we see a nubile teen girl (played by Marine Vacth) entering a hotel room, while calmly discussing in voiceover her reasoning for becoming a prostitute.

Navigating Documentary 'Venus and Serena' with the Williams Sisters Was Not Easy

Veteran broadcast journalists Maiken Baird and Michelle Major spent four years obtaining access to the private world of tennis superstars the Williams sisters for "Venus and Serena," which debuted last week at the Toronto Film Festival. But when the tennis documentary finally premiered, it did so without the Williams sisters. On September 11, they withdrew their support of the film.

Bernardo Bertolucci Named President of the International Jury of the Venezia 70 Competition

The jury president of the 70th Venice Film Festival international competition jury will be top Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci. The Venice Biennale, Europe's oldest film festival, will run from August 28 through September 7. 2013. The jury will award the Golden Lion and other official prizes; South Korean Oscar submission "Pieta" won the Golden Lion last year; the prize has also gone in recent years to Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain" and Sofia Coppola's "Somewhere."
