Toronto Preview: Mavericks and Doc Speakers, and a New Studio Ghibli Doc

More and more, film festivals are relying on more than film programming to lure audiences. The expansive Toronto International Film Festival is no exception. This year's Mavericks lineup of eight speakers in a Q & A format is high profile indeed. Perhaps to make up for world premiering "Wild" at Telluride, producer-star Reese Witherspoon will do a conversation about that dilm and "The Good Lie."

Science Chases the Impossible in Todd Miller's Moving, Provocative Doc 'Dinosaur 13' (TRAILER)

One of the most impressive things about “Dinosaur 13," Todd Miller’s moving documentary that premiered at Sundance and hits theaters August 15 from Lionsgate, is that it makes the audience realize -- and feel -- what it means to lose something incredibly important. A spouse? No. A child? Not quite.

London is still to come.

'Fury' Starring Brad Pitt Closes London Film Festival in Bid for Oscar Contention

David Ayer's "Fury" is a movie I want to see. That's because Ayer is a visceral, innovative director who pulls strong performances from his actors, from Christian Bale and Freddy Rodriguez in "Harsh Times" to Michael Pena and Jake Gyllenhaal in hand-held indie "End of Watch," which made my 2012 Ten Best List. But trying to figure out "Fury" as an Oscar contender is another matter. Clearly Sony is pushing the movie into the awards corridor, moving up its release date from November to October in order to accommodate a closing night berth at the London Film Festival.

In advance of the Toronto International Film Festival, Andrew Karpen, former Co-CEO of Focus Features, is launching new distribution company Bleecker Street to be based in New York City. Bleecker CEO Karpen will scout new films at this year’s TIFF; he plans release 3-5 pictures in 2015 and more as time goes on. Karpen looks to fill the specialty market void left when Peter Schlessel took over Universal indie label Focus Features with a more genre-focus in mind.
