Sackler Talks Astonishing TIFF Doc 'Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus'

I learned a lot of things I did not know in Madeleine Sackler's astonishing documentary "Dangerous Acts Starring the Unstable Elements of Belarus," which HBO Documentary Films scooped up before its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. (HBO will air the film in 2014.) The weird title starts to make sense when you see the movie, which chronicles the many hurdles placed in front of an underground theater troupe, the Belarus Free Theatre.

Immersed in Movies: Transforming 'The Wizard of Oz' in 3-D for IMAX (VIDEO)

"The Wizard of Oz" gets a 3-D makeover for IMAX and relaunches the renovated TCL Chinese Theater for a one-week engagement September 20. Three scenes were previewed to press, and it was a nice sampling: the introduction of the Tin Man, the storming of the Wicked Witch's castle, and the climactic castle chase.

Talking 'Wadjda' Firsts: Film Shot Entirely in Saudia Arabia, and By a Woman (TRAILER)

When Haifaa Al Mansour made a short film several years ago with her brother and sister, and it was accepted at a regional film competition in Abu Dhabi, she didn't know she was taking on the title of Saudi Arabia’s first woman filmmaker. In the fall of 2012, she went to the Venice International Film Festival with "Wadjda," the first feature film to be made by a Saudi woman, and the first to be shot entirely inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. It recently scored an Indie Spirit nomination for Best First Feature.

'Salinger' Telluride Press Conference (VIDEO)

Shane Salerno's controversial two-hour "Salinger" documentary, which hits theaters September 6 via the Weinstein Company, debuted at the Telluride Film festival with a surprise Labor Day screening this week--to mixed reviews. The Weinsteins have also added the doc to the Toronto International Film Festival lineup, which means a total of seven films showing there. See the Telluride press conference below.
