SnagFilms Adds New Funding as Film Library Nears 5,000 Titles

SnagFilms has raised funding in the form of a new $6 million Series C financing round from not only the entire existing investment group, but new shareholder CNF Investments, LLC, an affiliate of Clark Enterprises, Inc.

Dano to Star as Young Brian Wilson in Pohlad's 'Love & Mercy'

"The Tree of Life" producer Bill Pohlad has been planning to direct a second film for some time. Now he's cast Paul Dano ("Ruby Sparks") as the young Brian Wilson in Oren Moverman's script, "Love and Mercy." The film picks key moments in Wilson's life, with and without the Beach Boys, through decades, and Pohlad is seeking an actor to play the older Wilson as well.

Academy Participates at Sundance for First Time Ever, Presents Conversation with Producer Will Packer

As part of the Academy Conversations series, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Blackhouse Foundation will present a conversation with producer Will Packer ("Think Like a Man," "Takers") at Sundance on January 19. This marks the first time the Academy has participated in one of the festival's programs.

Jason Blum Acquires Duplass Brothers' Found Footage Horror Title 'Peachfuzz'

Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions has nabbed distribution rights to found-footage horror film "Peachfuzz," produced by Mark and Jay Duplass. Blum and his company are the producers of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.

Lionsgate Brings in John Sacchi to Head Micro-Budget Feature Division; Aims for Genre Projects Under $2.5 Million

Lionsgate is bringing in production executive John Sacchi to head a micro-budget feature film division within the company. The operation will aim for horror and comedy pictures under $2.5 million, and is inspired by the successful Paramount Insurge, which was created in the wake of the "Paranormal Activity" franchise, and last year produced "The Devil Inside," a $1 million-budgeted film that made over $100 million worldwide.

A24 Acquires Sofia Coppola's 'Bling Ring,' Sets Release Date for June 2013

A24 has picked up Sofia Coppola's "The Bling Ring," with plans to release the film theatrically in June. "The Bling Ring" stars Emma Watson and newcomers Israel Broussard, Katie Chang, Claire Julian and Taissa Farmiga (Vera's younger sister) as a group of restless teens who loot the homes of celebrities for kicks.

Pressman To Produce De Palma Biopic Starring Pacino as Paterno

Producer Edward R. Pressman ("Wall Street") has optioned feature film rights to New York Times best seller "Paterno" by sports journalist Joe Posnanski. Ex-CAA partner-turned-manager Rick Nicita will also produce the biopic to star his client Al Pacino as Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. And with Brian De Palma ("Scarface," "Carlito’s Way") attached to direct "Happy Valley," the team behind "Carlito's Way" and "Scarface" is together again.

Watch All the Short Films Competing for an Oscar in Theaters February 1

ShortsHD and Magnolia Pictures will release all of the Oscar nominated shorts in over 260 theaters across the U.S., Canada and Europe on February 1. This will be the eighth year the Academy's selection of short films hit theaters.
