British Film Institute Unveils New Five-Year Plan

The British Film Institute has unveiled its much-anticipated five-year Future Plan, which they’ve dubbed Film Forever and which spells out a comprehensive blueprint for public film policy in the UK over the next five years. With a substantial chunk of change to invest--roughly £50 million a year--the primary targets are developing creative talent and audiences outside of London, more investment in film production and development and the continuing heritage conversion of worthy British films into digital format.

Rome Film Festival to Give 'Rise of the Guardians' Vanity Fair Award

The Rome Film Festival (November 9-17) will award the "Vanity Fair International Award for Cinematic Excellence" to Dreamworks' animated 3-D holiday-character adventure "Rise of the Guardians" (opening November 21) for the film's "innovative, artistic and strategic contribution" to contemporary cinema.

LACMA's Art + Film Gala Celebrates Kubrick and Artist Ed Ruscha, with Spielberg Tribute

LACMA will host the 2012 Art + Film Gala honoring artist Ed Ruscha and filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, with longtime friend and "A.I." inheritor Steven Spielberg tributing the late director, on October 27. The gala coincides with the museum's current "Ed Rucha: Standard" exhibition (running through January 21), and the upcoming, much-anticipated "Stanley Kubrick" exhibition, running November 1 - June 30.

Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh Takes Legal Action Against 'New Yorker' Burkle Profile, UPDATE

Following journalist Connie Bruck's Ron Burkle profile published Monday in The New Yorker entitled "Cashier du Cinema," which depicts Relativity Media CEO Ryan Kavanaugh as an incompetent businessman (which Hollywood insiders have long suspected) who has lost control of his company to Burkle, Kavanaugh and his lawyer are protesting, calling the piece "false and malicious."

Principal photography has begun on John Michael McDonagh's "Calvary," the follow-up to his 2011 Celtic crime comedy "The Guard," with Brendan Gleeson again starring, but swapping his Irish bad lieutenant Gerry Boyle for a good-hearted priest up against a hostile congregation.

Sony Pictures Classics Picks Up Another Middle Eastern Film and Foreign Oscar Submission

In the Works: Stephen Frears to Direct 'Philomena,' Starring Coogan and Dench

Stephen Frears has signed on to direct the Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope-penned "Philomena," a mother-son drama starring Coogan and Judi Dench. The script is an adaptation of Martin Sixsmith's "The Lost Child of Philomena Lee," and follows the true story of Sixsmith's wife's search for the son she gave up for adoption.
