Lisa Cholodenko & Frances McDormand's 'Olive Kitteridge' Impresses in Venice

The biggest positive surprise at Venice is probably Lisa Cholodenko’s HBO miniseries, “Olive Kitteridge.” Starring those national treasures Frances McDormand and Richard Jenkins as the title character and her pharmicist husband, Henry, the four-part series travels through their lives over some 25 years.

Emmy Watch: As TV Enters the Future, Its Academy Remains Stuck in the Past

If you watched tonight's Emmys and suddenly felt as though it were 1974 rather than 2014, you're not alone. Does 'Doctor Who' Have Room for Peter Capaldi?

Peter Capaldi could become one the great Doctors, with a grave sense of wonder that could carry the show pretty deeply "into darkness." It's an open whether the shinier, perkier, re-vamped, demo-baiting current version of the show has room for that kind of greatness.

Showtime Renews Emmy-Nominated 'Masters of Sex' and 'Ray Donovan' for Third Seasons

My favorite summer TV series is "Masters of Sex," which has deepened its exploration of male-female relationship dynamics in its second season. So I'm delighted to report that Showtime has renewed the hourlong series about the work and life of the famous sex research couple Masters and Johnson for a third season, along with hardboiled drime series "Ray Donovan," starring Liev Schreiber and Jon Voight.
