Baltasar Kormákur Launches 'Trapped,' Icelandic Crime Series

Iceland import Baltasar Kormákur, who the studios value because he can handle global movie stars in action like Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington ("2 Guns"), feels strongly about fostering talent in his home country, where he is a rock star. He's using his Hollywood leverage back home, where he has founded a new production outfit (RVK Studios) and VFX company (Framestore is now called RVX). “I developed 'Trapped' because I was fascinated with the idea of a terrible crime in a small town cut off from the rest of the world.”

'2 Guns' Blasts Mild August Weekend; 'Smurfs 2' Lags Stateside; 'Conjuring' Most Profitable Movie Ever Made?

Universal returned to the #1 spot with Denzel Washington-Mark Wahlberg actioner "2 Guns," the latest in the studio's diverse string of successful openings, after an expensive detour with the dreadful opening of "R.I.P.D." "2 Guns" led a top 10 that totaled about $120 million in gross, a jump of $8 million over last year. Meantime, the domestic take for "The Smurfs 2" disappointed, although Sony reports better international returns.

Review and Roundup: '2 Guns' Tries to Breathe Life Into Old Formula

"2 Guns" is a great example of what's right and wrong with commercial studio moviemaking these days. It's smarter and more entertaining than your average $80-million schlocker. And it's got a cast of wily entertainers keeping us engaged, from sparring undercover agents Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg (the trailer gives that high-concept away) to villains Bill Paxton (as a corrupt CIA agent) and Edward James Olmos (as a Mexican drug lord).

'Kon-Tiki' to Hit Theaters in English-Language Version, Riding Tide of Scandinavian Film Popularity

With Norway's Oscar-nominated "Kon-Tiki" hitting theaters on April 19, the Weinstein Company is opting to release the film's English-language version stateside, to maximize interest and attempt to elevate the film from the subtitled ghetto that keeps most foreign titles' box office in check. As pointed out in Variety, the seafaring adventure film may be the first of the Academy's nominees to be shot scene-for-scene in two languages.

Director Kormakur Literally Jumped Into Iceland's 'Deep' with Oscar Entry, Plans Viking Adventure

Iceland's shortlisted Oscar entry "The Deep" (spring 2013) is based on the true story of the sole survivor of a downed fishing boat. Baltasar Kormakur is a member of a growing band of truly international filmmakers who make films at home as well as Hollywood. Producer-star Mark Wahlberg starred in "Contraband," Kormakur's remake of his own "Reykjavik-Rotterdam," took a shine to the rugged Iceland actor-director, and went on to make another film with him, the upcoming $80-million actioner "Two Guns," co-starring Denzel Washington. Wahlberg is also producing an HBO pilot with him, "The Missionary."
