Box Office Top Ten: 'Noah' Floats High All Over the World, Challenged by Mighty 'Captain America'

Darren Aronofsky's $125-million Bible epic "Noah" easily took #1 this weekend. The $44 million gross was solid but not sensational. With international territories performing even better, the picture appears on its way to modest profits.

Friday Box Office: 'Noah' an Easy Number One, Hasta La Vista to Arnold's 'Sabotage'

For the first time since before Thanksgiving, box office revenues for a weekend will fall short of last year. Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" (Paramount) will dominate the top 10, with Friday's take at $15,238,000 (including Thursday evening shows). With the only other wide opener "Sabotage" (Open Road) at #7 with $1,825,000, grosses were down 30% from the same Friday in 2013.

Cinematographer Matthew Libatique Talks Ark and Arcs in 'Noah'

Darren Aronofsky has always been drawn to the mystical, and "Noah" is even ballsier than "Pi" or "The Fountain." Of course, it's divisive as environmental allegory and the conflict between religion and science. But I think it's a powerful evocation of creation and destruction, love and beauty, and the difficulty of raising a family. Talk about survival and rebirth: It's the ultimate road movie, according to cinematographer Matthew Libatique, who's shot every Aronofsky movie but "The Wrestler" because of a temporary rift.

Four Directors Who Torture Their Actors, from Hitch to Trier (CLIPS)

It's no secret that Lars von Trier pushes his actresses to the edge-- and sometimes all the way over. A director's commitment to wringing the most out of their actors dates back to another vainglorious Von: Eric von Stroheim ("Greed") was notorious for using offscreen acrimony to get what he wanted onscreen, while Alfred Hitchcock sent poor Tippi Hedren into a room to be pecked by live crows. Here are four directors who stop at nothing to get what they want from their actors.

How Did Darren Aronofsky Build 'Noah''s Ark? Watch and Find Out (VIDEO)

A new featurette has arrived for Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic "Noah," wherein the director takes us through the process of building a key set piece: the ark. In the video, Aronofsky and his production designer Mark Friedberg discuss how the dimensions of the ark are laid out in the Bible. As opposed to a ship-like structure with a bow (the conventional image of Noah's ark), the structure is actually described as a giant box, which is exactly what the "Noah" team have made.
