My Night at the Riviera Maya Film Fest Premiere of 'Night Moves' with Peter Sarsgaard, Anxiety and a Jewel Heist

From a jungle on the beach in Quintana Roo blooms the Riviera Maya Film Festival. Now in the mid-swing of its third year, the fest opened with Kelly Reichardt's "Night Moves." In attendance was star Peter Sarsgaard, who came down to the peninsula with wife Maggie Gyllenhaal on his birthday and charmed the international press at a conference earlier in the day.

TIFF, Day Four: Egoyan's 'Devil's Knot,' Hendrix Biopic 'All Is By My Side,' Jonze and Reichardt Q&A and More

I forgot to mention one of yesterday's highlights: while Maureen O'Donnell and I were waiting in line for the excellent documentary "Finding Vivian Maier," we were stunned to see a long phalanx of orange-t-shirted volunteers with linked arms making a human shield on either side of Susan Sarandon, protecting her from the hoi polloi as she left the first public screening of "The Last of Robin Hood."

Venice Film Festival 2013 Review: Kelly Reichardt's 'Night Moves'

Three radical environmentalists blow up a hydro-electric dam in Oregon, and then face the consequences of their extreme actions in Kelly Reichardt's meditative, observational suspense-drama. Already beloved by many for her minimalist chronicles of American malaise "Wendy and Lucy" and "Meek's Cutoff," Reichardt's fifth feature is strongest in its set-up before becoming a tad perplexing and taking a baffling wrong turn at its inconclusive ending.
