Phase 4 Films has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to writer-director Andrew Edison's high school comedy "Bindlestiffs." This is the first film released under the new "Kevin Smith's SModcast Pictures Presents" banner.

Kevin Smith may be remembered not as a gifted screenwriter and not-so-great director and occasional comic relief player but as the guy who pioneered self-marketing on the internet. He was an early adopter, with movie-poop-shoot.com and other sites; his Twitter account @ThatKevinSmith logs over 1 million followers. He loves hanging out on Twitter, engaging directly with his fans. And they loyally show up to his movies. But there are only so many of them.

In case some of these stories got past you, Amy Dawes rounds up the day's industry news: While confessing to some fatigue at its length, Screen's Tim Grierson generally raves about the pulpy thrills of Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island, which premiered out of competition Saturday at the Berlin film festival and opens Feb. 19 stateside. But New York Magazine's David Edelstein calls it a long slog, and Emanuel Levy finds it similarly overwrought. In case you've somehow avoided it, here's the trailer.

Kevin Smith vs. Bruce Willis: "A Lion in Winter"

Kevin Smith has been open about his difficulties directing Bruce Willis on the set of his new comedy co-starring Tracy Morgan, A Couple of Cops. "He's undirectable," he said. At the New Moon premiere Smith kidded producer James Jacks, saying, "Dude, why didn't you tell me!" The movie may have turned out okay (here's an early AICN review), but point is, Smith and I agreed, the glory days for stars are over.

Kevin Smith Talks Superman

For those of you who missed this chestnut---it was posted on YouTube in 2006--Kevin Smith spent twenty minutes on one of his lecture tours explaining what really happened back in 1996/1997 when Warner Bros. and producer Jon Peters (always entertaining fodder) hired him to write Superman. As long as the Superman franchise seems to be betwixt and between, why not take a gander at what Smith had in mind? At any rate, Smith is nothing if not an engaging storyteller, and he's got this one down.
