New Short Film Series from Morgan Spurlock and Paul Allen Will Query US Economy

Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock (2005's "Super Size Me") and exec producer Paul G. Allen of Vulcan Productions have announced a new partnership to produce and distribute a series of 20 short films that will investigate the current state of the US economy.

Morgan Spurlock Inks One-of-a-Kind Deal with Associated Press, Partners with Virgil and Abramorama UPDATED

When you've got a brand, use it. Morgan Spurlock has made himself a name in documentaries. He's one of those prolific larger-than-life personalities who knows how to work the systems, and his indie production company Warrior Poets has now sealed a one-of-a-kind deal with Associated Press.

Sony Concert Doc 'One Direction' Boosts Labor Day Weekend Box Office, 'Closed Circuit' Flops

Forget the September doldrums. Sony's Brit boy band 3-D concert film "One Direction" was a solid number one. And major support came from four strong holdovers: "The Butler," "We're the Millers," "Planes" and "Elysium." All told, the three days will come in with about $84 million for the top 10, up $5 million from last year, and enough to increase the tiny year-to-date lead over 2012 that has taken eight months to achieve.

This Weekend: Eclectic Bag with Docs 'Our Nixon' and Spurlock's 'One Direction: This Is Us,' Drafthouse's 'I Declare War'

As the fall festival circuit gets underway, an eclectic mix of films hit theaters this weekend. The critical winner is Penny Lane's documentary "Our Nixon," which pieces together Super 8 footage taken by Richard Nixon's White House aides during his presidency.

LAFF: 'Short Term 12,' 'Crash Reel,' Indiewire Influencers Rock the Regal

I'm getting used to schlepping downtown on Olympic to LAFF and laying down my 8 bucks for parking at LA Live. The theaters at Regal Cinemas were packed for two fest hits, Destin Cretton's SXSW prize-winner "Short Term 12" and Lucy Walker's Sundance entry "Crash Reel," which brought a standing ovation for snowboarder Kevin Pearce.
