Stone Talks Wall Street Dysfunction and South of the Border Tour

Fox conducted Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps interviews at the Hotel du Cap cabanas by the Mediterranean on a grey day with drizzle in the air. I have always enjoyed talking to Oliver Stone. An unashamed liberal, he's a well-informed, gifted visual storyteller who, like Clint Eastwood, keeps hungrily filling his head with knowledge and churning out movies. Saturday Stone sat with a group of international press and expounded on his fave obsession, the dysfunctional world financial system--and he also excoriates the International Monetary Fund.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps Review

Friday morning's 8:30 AM press screening for Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps was packed and earned applause as journos ran out of the Lumiere before the movie had finished to get into the press conference. Stay to the end and you had no shot of getting in. The Robin Hood press conference was less imperative.

News Update: Grand Ole Opry Flooded, Spielberg Picks War Horse, Stone Tours South America

Flood damage to the Grand Ole Opry House was reportedly topic number one in the Nashville music community Monday. At least three feet of water encroached on the historic venue, whose stage is considered hallowed ground in country music. This weekend's shows have been relocated to the Ryman Auditorium downtown, an equally revered venue that fortunately was unaffected. Heavy rains and the rising waters of the Cumberland River devastated middle Tennessee over the weekend.

Rating Likely Candidates for Cannes

Of the 40 films on indieWIRE's Cannes wish list--a clever way of reporting what might be going without knowing for sure what will be announced on April 15--I hear that Oliver Stone's Wall Street Never Sleeps and Woody Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger are going, while Cannes negotiations for The Tree of Life are proceeding smoothly re: Brad Pitt and Sean Penn walking the red carpet and doing a press conference without the retiring director, which is a big concession for Cannes.

Wall Street 2, Tree of Life, Woody Allen Heading for Cannes

It's not official yet, but it looks pretty sure that Oliver Stone will finally be making his Cannes debut, with the sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, starring Michael Douglas 23 years after his first turn as Gordon Gekko, and Carey Mulligan as his daughter. Shia LaBeouf and W star Josh Brolin also star. It's long overdue, if you ask me. Oliver Stone is an auteur in my book, even if the Cannes selectors hasn't deemed him one of their elite so far.
