Now and Then: Wes Anderson and Ridley Scott, Two Master Stylists Whose Best Work Is Past

Let me begin by clarifying my headline. I am not saying that Wes Anderson and Ridley Scott, two master stylists with new movies in theaters, will not someday surpass their best films; that kind of prediction is impossible and counterproductive. But it must be admitted that they set the bar high, and neither has yet leaped over it.

Review: Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' Offers Eye-Popping 'Alien' Origin Myth

Ridley Scott’s return to the genre that forged his reputation as a visionary stylist arrives weighed down by expectations it was always going to struggle to match, let alone surpass. "Prometheus" contains neither the taut, visceral chills of "Alien" nor ground-breaking aesthetic of "Blade Runner" but does bite off some colossal themes.

Review Round-Up and Featurette: Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" Promises Serious Eye-Candy

Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" premieres in the U.S. on June 8, but after overseas debuts in France, Russia, and England critics have inked their responses and some spoiler-heavy ones at that. The handful of critics who published early reviews agree that the film's visuals are stunning and Ridley Scott is right at home in the "world creation" part of his fantasy films. The new featurette on the space ship Prometheus posted below is irrefutable evidence of stunning visuals. It's still up for debate whether the movie provides substance to the heady questions of morality and existence.

IN THE WORKS: 'Blade Runner' Sequel, Blanchett-Wasikowska Lesbian Romance, Paltrow for Picasso & Dujardin's Next

Ridley Scott has an idea for a sequel to his classic 1982 film "Blade Runner," and the original's writer Hampton Fancher is in talks to put it into action on paper. Scott and Alcon Entertainment say only that the story would pick up "some years after the first film concluded."

'Prometheus' Stars Theron & Rapace Sing Praises For Non-Objectifying Ridley Scott

EW's cover story on "Prometheus" (May 18) helps to highlight why so many of us are looking forward to the Ridley Scott film. Not only does "Prometheus" signal Scott's return to his "Alien" roots (he tells EW he was "marginally hurt" that he was never asked to direct the sequels) with a to-die-for cast, it injects the macho summer box office with strong women.

'Prometheus' Celebrates Fassbender's Fascinating Robot; Fox Confirms Film Not Yet Rated

While Fox confirms to TOH! that Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" (June 8) has not yet been submitted for a rating (dashing rumors of a PG-13), the studio has released a new video celebrating the birthday of David the robot, played by the ever-fascinating Michael Fassbender. (Think HAL on steroids.) Matt Mueller, who attended the London "Prometheus" preview, warns that Fassbender "appears in serious danger of walking away with the movie."

Media Watch: No Cameron 'Prometheus' In Sight; Deadline Falls for April Fool's Prank

Beware of April Fool's announcements. (I loved FoxLA's story about drought-ridden California farmers planting marshmallow trees, below.) While plans to make an Ashton Kutcher/Steve Jobs project appear to be in earnest, Deadline's Mike Fleming did fall for a report that James Cameron wants to direct a "Prometheus" sequel.
