New York Film Critics Circle 2013 Winners (UPDATE)

The New York Film Critics Circle winners can be hugely influential on other awards races, especially in a year with so many hopefuls. "American Hustle"took home three awards and Oscar frontrunner "12 Years a Slave" settled for best director. Frontrunners Cate Blanchett and Jared Leto took their respective categories. Anyone wondering if Jennifer Lawrence would wind up with a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination can be assured that she will. And Hollywood/Indiewood icon Robert Redford will also land an Oscar nomination for "All is Lost."

Ranking Best and Worst NC-17-Rated Films, as 'Blue is the Warmest Color' Opens (Video)

It was no surprise when Cannes Palme d'Or winner "Blue is the Warmest Color" earned an NC-17 rating for “explicit sexual content.” Sundance Selects/IFC Films figured that would be the case when they submitted it. They were stirring up some ratings controversy to lure people to see the lesbian romance starring two lovingly photographed nubile French actresses. They could go unrated stateside if they wanted to. They want audiences to know that the film is not trimmed or softened in any way.

Oscar-Winner John Ridley Talks Writing '12 Years a Slave' and Directing Hendrix Biopic 'All Is By My Side'

John Ridley has been honing his craft for years, apprenticing with John Wells on "Third Watch," through multiple movie scripts ("U-Turn," "Red Tails") and television series ("Barbershop," "Platinum") to his first feature "Cold Around the Heart." He wrote the script for Oscar frontrunner "12 Years a Slave" as well as his sophomore directing effort, Jimi Hendrix slice-of-life "All Is by My Side," which both played the Toronto Film Festival.
