Review: Malick Stumbles with 'To The Wonder'

There are no dinosaurs in Terrence Malick's sixth feature, but there are bison, sea turtles, prairies, toxic sludge, sun-dappled water, more prairies, a conflicted priest (Javier Bardem) and enough pirouetting by Olga Kurylenko to make you imagine that she probably felt dizzy at the end of each day's shooting.

'To the Wonder' Q & A: Olga Kurylenko on Goosebumps, Bruises, Malick and Affleck Fights on Cutting Room Floor

Olga Kurylenko got goosebumps in her first audition for Terrence Malick. It wasn't simply that the reclusive auteur was considering her for a leading role in "To The Wonder". Having flown out to meet him at his Austin, Texas base, she also marveled at Malick's uncanny intuition. "I felt almost a telepathic connection," insists the 33-year-old Ukraine-born actress, who burst onto the scene as a Bond girl in 2008's "Quantum Of Solace." "From the questions he was asking me and the things he was saying to me, he seemed to know everything about me and my past."

Trailer Watch: Sun-Soaked Love in Terrence Malick's 'To The Wonder'

Terrence Malick's "To The Wonder" was not received with the same enthusiasm as "The Tree of Life," but as usual it has its lovers and haters -- this is to be expected with the auteur's uncompromising work. "To The Wonder," which premiered at Venice and Toronto earlier this year and stars Ben Affleck, Olga Kurylenko, Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem, will be released stateside April 12 by Magnolia Pictures. Take a look at the trailer below, which echos themes from "Tree of Life" in a more romantic context. It features the trademark sun-soaked imagery from Malick's go-to cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki.

Magnolia Pictures Nabs US Rights to Malick’s 'To the Wonder' for 2013 Release

One of the luckiest things that ever happened to Terrence Malick was Fox Searchlight falling in love with his labor of love "The Tree of Life." Who else would have lavished so much care and attention on a film that topped out at $13.3 million domestic?

Kris Tapley and I go over the Oscar race post-Toronto and Telluride, from Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" and Terrence Malick's "To the Wonder" to the fate of "Anna Karenina" and "Cloud Atlas." Neither of us liked "Hyde Park on Hudson" very much.
