Fantastic Fest Review: With ‘Frankenweenie,' Tim Burton Revives Pet Project, Returns to Form

"Frankenweenie" is probably Tim Burton’s best film in almost a decade, but that’s not much of a compliment. With his last five films, the filmmaker responsible for some of the most fun, mischievous and magical cinema of the past 25 years has settled into a disappointing routine of utterly safe “weirdness.”

Comic-Con Wrap: from 'Walking Dead' Zombie-Proof Car and 'Twilight' Finale to Marvel Panel; Costume Photo Gallery

Comic-Con is great fun if you don't have to be in Hall H. I'd skip it and watch the panels on YouTube if I didn't want to see the early footage. The Hall H security was so tight this year that even the studio PR execs were complaining about trying to get their people in. I bargained for passes for each individual studio panel..

Comic-Con: Touring The Art of 'Frankenweenie,' Tim Burton Shares 3-D Footage (VIDEO)

The high point of Comic-Con remains Tim Burton's "Frankenweenie," which opens Fantastic Fest on September 20 and hits theaters October 5. First, for all the naysayers who want Burton to stop remaking studio titles and fairy tales starring Johnny Depp (as voiced by one questioner in Hall H), this is a strictly personal project that takes the filmmaker back to his animation roots at Cal Arts and Disney; the original live action short was included in his recent traveling museum exhibition.

Comic-Con: Even Without Fox, 'Dark Knight,' or 'Star Trek,' Plenty to See, from Burton and Jackson to 'Game of Thrones'

Comic-Con is so noisy and logistically energy-draining--they're expecting 130,000 attendees this year-- that it's tempting to just watch the Hall H panel videos from afar. Isn't the "Twilight" series over already? (Actually, no, and the sad death of a fan who was struck by a car while trying to join an early "Twilight" Comic-Con line attests to that.)

INTERVIEW: Modern Gothic Master Seth Grahame-Smith Talks 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,' 'Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,' 'Dark Shadows'

Novelist and screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith is a gothic mash-up master. He broke the mold with a title that caught everyone's sensibilities hilariously off-guard: "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." On June 22nd, his adaptation of his own bestseller hits screens: producer Burton and director Timur Bekmambetov's "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter."
