Can Fox Searchlight Turn 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' Into a Serious Oscar Contender?

Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" could very well be a major awards player in 2014. The specialty box office sensation (almost $52 million domestic at the time of writing, and $140 million worldwide) is in the Top Ten two months after its initial release. It could score Oscar nominations for director, writer, actor, art direction, score, costumes and cinematography, as well as being a popular contender for critics awards come the year's end. It does happen.

Box Office Top Ten: 'Noah' Floats High All Over the World, Challenged by Mighty 'Captain America'

Darren Aronofsky's $125-million Bible epic "Noah" easily took #1 this weekend. The $44 million gross was solid but not sensational. With international territories performing even better, the picture appears on its way to modest profits.

Friday Box Office: Holdovers Battle 'Need for Speed' for Top Spot, 'Grand Budapest' & 'Veronica Mars' Reach Top 10

A three-way race for the weekend #1 started off with the DreamWorks video game adaptation "Need for Speed" (distributed by Buena Vista) on top with $6.64 million. But either #2, "300: Rise of an Empire" (Warner Bros.) with $5.8 million, or more likely "Mr. Peabody and Sherman" (20th Century-Fox), at $5.45 million could overtake "Speed" by the time final results are in on Monday.

Production Designer Adam Stockhausen Talks 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' (VIDEOS)

Imagine going from "12 Years a Slave" to "The Grand Budapest Hotel." That's exactly what happened to production designer Adam Stockhausen, who was able to convey beauty in the darkest of dramas, but when it came to Wes Anderson's witty caper, there was no holding back the Czech Republic eye candy: a pink hotel, a dollop of yellow butter cream, and the sugary Mendl's bakery.
