Thompson on Hollywood

- Superman has a new daddy: Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) will direct Warner Bros' franchise revival, with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas producing--the dynamic duo that rebooted Batman. Nolan came up with the story; Batman Begins scribe David S. Goyer wrote the screenplay, which brings back villain General Zod. “I feel super awesome,” Snyder told the LAT, while admitting that he lies awake at night thinking of how his Superman - who "has to be a man" - will be recreated. No boys need apply for the job; this is a the "biggest and baddest of them all," Snyder says, "The greatest of them all, right? We all want to know how the next chapter takes shape. I want to know how it will take shape.”

- Hard to imagine this working without him, but Matt Damon has yet to confirm his involvement with The Bourne Legacy. Let's hope that Tony Gilroy (the franchise's consistent screenwriter, the writer/director of Michael Clayton and Duplicity) directing the fourth installment won't discourage Damon. He previously said that he wouldn't do it without Paul Greengrass (who directed The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum--and the disappointing Green Zone). One would think the mega paycheck would lure Damon back, but he isn't exactly struggling to find work. They'll recast if they have to.

- Meanwhile, Peter Jackson is inching his way into production on The Hobbit. Negotiations between MGM and Warner Bros. are all but signed and Jackson's directing fee and gross percentage have been negotiated. Will the film will be in 3-D? Stand by for the official greenlight.

- While The Great Gatsby is in development, musical movie maven Baz Luhrmann is trying to find time to direct an episode of Glee. He's already chatted with Ryan Murphy and is a huge fan of the show: "I think those kids are phenomenal."

Tony Gilroy is on record publicly hating on all three films in the trilogy. Mostly because Greengrass and Damon rewrote him in the last two movies in order to make them work. He refused even to see Ultimatum. Meanwhile, Matt apparently shot a PSA with Doug Liman today. Just food for thought.
