Steven Spielberg Picks Next Project Starring Bradley Cooper

I keep hoping that Spielberg will push forward with biopic “Gershwin" with Zachary Quinto in the lead role. But Spielberg has chosen his post-"Lincoln" directing gig, and it's not the postponed "Robapocalypse." He's going to Warner Bros. to do “American Sniper” starring Bradley Cooper.

With the recent news that Mike White's "Enlightened" won't be picked up for a third season by HBO, the writer-director-actor has signed with DreamWorks to adapt "Silver Linings Playbook" author Matthew Quick's latest novel, "The Good Luck of Right Now." The story centers on four outsiders who form a makeshift family in the midst of grieving over the pain and loss in their lives.

You couldn't find a more apt movie to sum up DreamWorks Animation at the moment than "The Croods" (March 22), the prehistoric road trip adventure about embracing change as a survival strategy when the world turns terribly hostile. After last year's box office misfire with "Rise of the Guardians," which resulted in a $165 million write-off, layoffs, and schedule reshuffle, DreamWorks is definitely in transition.

Netflix is teaming up with DreamWorks Animation for their first ever original series for kids. It will be based on DreamWorks' "Turbo," due in theaters this Summer. Netflix's "Turbo: F. A. S. T. (Fast Action Stunt Team)" will then debut in December.

It's clear that working with Wes Anderson has had a strong influence on Coppola's second feature. - Jon Hamm is considering starring in "Epic Fail," a Kevin Costello written comedy about a high school teacher who attempts to fake some heroism by hiring two of his students to stage a kidnapping of his wife.

It was an odd day, bookended by two events that drew together an amazing swath of Hollywood's older generation. I saw CAA partner Bryan Lourd, DreamWorks' Marvin Levy, and Sundance's Michelle Satter at both events, and while the Lois Smith memorial in the morning and Peggy Siegal-wrangled PBS documentary "Inventing David Geffen" in the evening were very different affairs, they both marked rites of passage.

Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" opened with the most impressive limited gross of the year, solidifying its status as a rigorous Oscar contender. Though not the top per screen average of the year, it opened wider - 11 theaters in seven cities, not just NY/LA - than those with higher average numbers.

The Motion Picture & Television Fund has received a hefty donation from the three founders of DreamWorks SKG; Steven Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg and David Geffen will each give $30 million to the campaign to help ensure the MPTF's charitable programs and services are available to those in need, and so the program may continue to grow.
