Beatles Documentary 'Good ol' Freda' Acquired by Magnolia Pictures

Magnolia Pictures has snagged North American distribution rights to Ryan White's "Good ol' Freda," a documentary that tells the unsung story of Freda Kelly, The Beatles' secretary. Magnolia plans to release the film theatrically later this year.

Magnolia Acquires Sundance and SXSW Music Doc 'Muscle Shoals'

Magnolia Pictures likes docs. The indie distributor has acquired US rights to Greg "Freddy" Camalier's Sundance entry "Muscle Shoals," a documentary about the Alabama Muscle Shoals recording studio that spawned some of the greatest records of all time. Produced by Stephen Badger and Camalier, the film includes interviews with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Percy Sledge, Gregg Allman, Clarence Carter, Alicia Keys, Bono and more. The film is debuting in Austin Tuesday at the Paramount Theater as part of the SXSW Film Festival.

Sundance Deal: Magnolia and CNN Capture Killer Whale Doc 'Blackfish'

Magnolia Pictures and new company CNN Films have confirmed the acquisition of U.S. rights to Gabriela Cowperthwaite's documentary thriller "Blackfish," about the killer whale Tilikum who killed three people including, in an eery echo of "Rust and Bone," a trainer. The movie screened Saturday night at the Temple Theatre in Park City. Several distribs were circling, including TWC-Radius, Lionsgate, eOne, HBO and Sony Pictures Classics.
