Why Roadside Attractions Is the Right Distributor to Handle Justin Simien's College Satire 'Dear White People' (VIDEO)

With a solid target audience of college students and millennials, it will be fascinating to see how Roadside Attractions handles the release of marketer-turned-filmmaker Justin Simien's cutting racial satire "Dear White People," given that the Sundance prize-winner started out as a provocative concept trailer that went viral in 2012 on Twitter, Facebook, Vimeo, crowd-funding site Indiegogo and YouTube. This provided investors with reason to back the rookie director's first feature.

Who Needs an Oscar Nod? 'Gloria' Scores Strong Initial Numbers Along with 'Stranger by the Lake' and 'Visitors'

The new year has its first subtitled success with the strong opening of Chile Oscar submission "Gloria" (Roadside Attractions), which did not make the Foreign Language shortlist. Opening with a higher per screen average than "No," Chile's nominee last year (starring Gael Garcia Bernal), "Gloria" benefited from strong reviews.

Dustin Smith Moves from Roadside to Gravitas In Time for Sundance

As the 2014 Sundance Film Festival is about to kick off, Gravitas Ventures is launching Gravitas Theatrical, aimed to intensify the company’s focus on theatrical release campaigns. Set to head this new division as VP is Dustin Smith, formerly at Roadside Attractions for almost a decade as VP of Acquisitions.

Roadside Attractions Takes 'In a World...' with Sony Worldwide

Triple-threat Lake Bell, who wrote, directed, and starred in "In a World..." which won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance, has sold her movie to Roadside Attractions (U.S.) and Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group (foreign). Roadside Attractions is planning a summer 2013 release for the film.

'Arbitrage' Marks New Trend of Releasing Pay-Per-View Earnings

Richard Gere's Bernie Madoff-esque thriller "Arbitrage" reportedly now holds the record for combined sales for a movie released concurrently in theaters and VOD, grossing more than $7.3 million on the big screen and about $11 million on small screens. It also marks a slowly increasing trend of companies (in this case Roadside Attractions and Lions Gate Entertainment) starting to reveal heretofore hidden pay-per-view sales figures, as VOD becomes more relevant to independent film profit and distribution.
