VFX Winner Rhythm & Hues Files for Bankruptcy, Underscores Sector's Economic Woes

The fragile economics of the visual effects industry was front and center at last week's Visual Effects Society awards. And even the well-respected company, Rhythm & Hues, that spearheaded and supervised the extraordinary visual effects in Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" --which won best live action feature effects at the VES and BAFTA awards and is favored to win the VFX Oscar-- is in danger.

Sony Boasts Biggest Year Ever in 2012

2012 was Sony Pictures Entertainment's biggest year ever. The studio's films generated $4.440 billion worldwide. The studio hit all time highs with $1.768 billion in domestic ticket sales and $2.672 billion internationally. The studio ended the year as the top-ranked studio in both domestic and worldwide marketshare. While Twentieth Century Fox beat Sony internbationally, Sony still claims number one worldwide.

'Skyfall' is Biggest Film in UK History, Eclipsing 'Avatar'

"Skyfall" is now the UK's biggest film in history, eclipsing "Avatar"'s ÂŁ94 million with ÂŁ94.27 million in 40 days (particularly staggering given James Cameron's sci-fi blockbuster got to that haul after 11 months, and with increased 3-D ticket prices).

Moving on from 'House of Cards,' Will Fincher Return to Salander and Play 'with Fire'?

David Fincher's upcoming film slate has been shifting over the last week, and some are speculating that it may be moving in the direction of Lisbeth Salander. Not so fast, guys. With news that the director broke up with Egyptian beauty "Cleopatra," starring Angelina Jolie, and with Sony's confirmation that "The Girl Who Played with Fire" would not be a 2013 release (the kernel is that the sequel is in the works at all), eyes are on Fincher to return for the sequel.

Sony Pictures Acquires Dark Comedy "Revenge for Jolly!"

Sony Pictures acquires "Revenge for Jolly!" for US and Canadian distribution - marking the first acquisition for the newly-formed affiliate company of Charles Roven's Atlas Entertainment. "Revenge for Jolly!" premiered at the 2012 Tribeca FIlm Festival. The dark comedy examines the moral ambiguity of revenge as one man tries to avenge the suspicious death of his beloved dog. Directed by Chadd Harbold and written by Brian Petsos, "Revenge for Jolly!" stars Petsos and Oscar Isaac, and features cameos from a long roster of other actors and comedians including Elijah Wood, Adam Brody, Ryan Phillippe, and Kristen Wiig.

Sony Lands Sorkin for Steve Jobs Biopic

Following up on their successful collaboration on David Fincher's "The Social Network," Sony and producer Scott Rudin are bringing on Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin to adapt Walter Isaacson's Steve Jobs' bestselling biography. The project is being produced by Rudin, Mark Gordon and Guymon Casady.

Which of the six studio presentations at CinemaCon were represented by their chairmen? One could argue that the ones who most wanted to be identified with their slates, to OWN them if you will, were the ones who showed up.
