WATCH: Silver-Haired Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges Go Dystopic in 'The Giver'

A new, longer trailer for "The Giver" has landed, and while it looks all-too similar to its recent fellow-dystopia cousins, it should give some hope to fans of Lois Lowry's iconic novel.

Cannes Opener 'Grace of Monaco,' Starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Kelly, May Seek New Stateside Distributor

Nicole Kidman in "Grace of Monaco"
Well, it looks like Harvey Weinstein hasn't worked his Oscar wiles on filmmaker Olivier Dahan, who directed Marion Cotillard to an Oscar in "La Vie en Rose." The American distributor had wanted to craft another Oscar contender. But the French director likes his own final cut--which is opening the Cannes Film Festival on May 14. If TWC drops the release, the producers of the Nicole Kidman biopic may be in search of a new stateside distributor. It is not mentioned in any of Weinstein's advance Cannes email pitches so far.

Review and Round-Up: Stephen Frears' Oscar-Friendly 'Philomena' Stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan (TRAILER)

It's no surprise that the Weinstein Co. is releasing "Philomena," which is one of those movies aimed squarely at the Academy middle. It took a while for writer-producer-star Steve Coogan--who seems to be trying to perform some kind of career rehab by playing a softer-hearted creature than his usual--to persuade Stephen Frears to do the directing honors.

Hurricane Sandy Hurts NYC Indie Film World: Studios, Rep Theatres

As if independent film isn't up against enough already. The indie film world in New York City has taken a battering since the violent arrival of Hurricane Sandy earlier this week, with various Manhattan-based headquarters wading through flooding and power outages at the moment when Oscar season planning should be ramping up. The Tribeca offices for Indiewire/Snagfilms have been without power and shuttered all week with staffers working remotely; they are expected to reopen on Monday, November 5.

2011 Sundance Film Fest Theatrical Acquisitions Underperform – Set Low Expectations for 2012

What does "Our Idiot Brother" have in common with "The Kids Are All Right," "Precious," "Sunshine Cleaning," "Once," "Little Miss Sunshine" and "March of the Penguins”? Like those other titles (distributed between 2005-2011), it was the highest-grossing film in theaters among those acquired at the Sundance Film Festival (SFF) the year it premiered.
