Paramount never gives up on trying effective new ways to reach Academy members. They've found in recent years that online video spots--like the one they created to show how Brad Pitt was transformed into Benjamin Button in the David Fincher film--reach many Academy members. They actually created a TV spot for "Transformers" highlighting the use of sound. Now they're broadcasting a brand spanking new Academy 90-second "Flight" spot that will debut this Sunday on "CBS Sunday Morning" and will also be the lead-in spot to "60 Minutes" on Sunday evening. Paramount wants to remind Academy members--also via various Zemeckis career retrospectives--of what a major A-lister he has been through the years. They're pushing Zemeckis for the $35-million drama "Flight" for a best picture push, as well as Denzel Washington for best actor and and Kelly Reilly, John Goodman and James Badge Dale in supporting. (Their best shot is Washington, who is soldily in the Gurus 'O Gold Top Five.)
A Directors Guild nomination is key to Zemeckis's Oscar hopes. Their balloting opened on Decermber 3 and will close at the beginning of January. Last weekend the director blanketed the area with DGA-member Q&A's in Westlake Village at the new Cineopolis Luxury Cinemas (complete with reclining seats and dinner and drinks service), West Los Angeles at the Landmark Theater followed by a reception in the Landmark Wine Bar, and the Paramount lot and the Valley. Last Sunday Paramount chairman Brad Grey hosted a brunch with Zemeckis, Washington and Reilly at the Bel Air Hotel for Academy members. This coming week Paramount has four-walled the Malibu Cinemas to open it to DGA, WGA and Academy members.
