Film Independent has chosen six filmmakers to take part in its Directing Lab, a nine-week long intensive that provides up-and-coming filmmakers the opportunity to develop their directorial voice under the mentorship of established filmmakers.  Lab participants are given a digital camera and a cash stipend to produce short scenes, receiving script feedback and production advice from their mentors.  This year, Film Independent has partnered with the International Cinematographers Guild, and lab participants will have the opportunity to work with the winners of the Cinematographers Guild's Emerging Cinematographer Award.

Directors Keith Gordon ("The Singing Detective"), Karyn Kusama ("Jennifer's Body") and Jeremy Podeswa ("Boardwalk Empire") will serve as this year's Lab Mentors.  Cinematographers Nancy Schreiber ("American Gun") and Amy Vincent ("Hustle & Flow"), as well as editor Amy Duddleston ("Laurel Canyon") will also be involved as Lab Advisors.  The full list of lab participants and their projects is below.

"Betty" by Nicole Jefferson Asher: Singer/songwriter Betty Mabry finds happiness in her marriage to Miles Davis, until she meets Jimi Hendrix.

"Foreign Relations" by Jon Goldman: An American family hosting a South Korean exchange student for the summer learns that secrets can be harder to keep from a stranger than from family.

"Raw" by Gil Kofman: Howie falls for a much younger Williamsburg hipster when his wife gives him permission to have an affair.

"The Fencer" by Jasmine McGlade Chazelle: A strong-willed athlete faces her demons as she attempts to make the U.S. Olympic Fencing Team.

"Three" by Anna Kerrigan: A college professor, his wife and her lover navigate the complexities of a polyamorous relationship.

"Unmanned" by Casey Cooper Johnson: An Air Force drone operator attempts to reconcile the suburban life he leads in Las Vegas with the war he wages at work by remote control.
