Berlin Review: Brilliant Faux Documentary 'The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq' (CLIP)

One of the happy surprises of the Berlinale is “L’enlevement de Michel Houellebecq (The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq).” Guillaume Nicloux’ 90-minute film is a faux documentary inspired by the real-life and still-unexplained disappearance of the celebrated and reclusive French author, who didn’t show up for part of a 2011 book tour, leading to a media frenzy and even to worries of an Al-Qaeda plot, and then returned days later, lips sealed. Nicloux’ genius is to fill in the blanks, and he does so hilariously.

Niche Doc On-Demand Release Targets Batman Fans (VIDEO)

Documentaries lend themselves to targeted niche marketing and, as "Detropia" proved last year, self-distribution. All you need is a subject with a defined fan base. Funded by more than 1,000 Kickstarter donors, Brett Culp's "Legends of the Knight" is a case in point. Relying on community support with each screening benefiting a local charity, the movie has been pulling in Batman fans across the country.

Docpoint Festival Review: In 'Pixadores,' Oppression is the Mother of Recklessness

The filmmaking is nearly as breathtaking as the subject matter in Amir Escandari’s “Pixadores,” a portrait of Sao Paolo’s revolutionary graffiti artists, who tag the tallest buildings in the dark of night, drive more finicky aesthetes insane and are certainly dropping a little equatorial rain on Brazil’s makeover parade.
